Global Warming doesn't exist, its just urbanization

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Average temperatures across California rose slightly from 1950 to 2000, with the greatest warming coming in the state's big cities and mostly caused by urbanization -- not greenhouse gases -- authors of a study released on Wednesday said. ADVERTISEMENT

The study found that average temperatures in California rose nearly 2 degrees Fahrenheit (nearly one degree Celsius) in the second half of the 20th century, led by large urban centers such as San Francisco and Southern California.

"Everybody's talking about the carbon coming out of the SUV exhaust or the coal plant, but in the past 50 years in California the bigger impact has been urbanization and suburbanization," said Bill Patzert of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, one of the study's authors.

"Exhaust from the SUV is just piling on," he said. "One is heating you from above, the other is heating you from below."

Data from the study showed that minimum temperatures, which typically occur at night, also increased more than daytime maximum temperatures, Patzert said, adding: "This is primarily due to increased urbanization, not increases in cloudiness or precipitation."

Urbanized areas do not cool at night as well as land in its natural state, he said.

The study, which was conducted by Patzert along with a California State University, Los Angeles, geography professor and a graduate student, analyzed data from 330 weather stations across the state from 1950 to 2000.

The authors found that average temperatures increased significantly in nearly 54 percent of the stations studied. The only area of California found to have cooled was a narrow band of the state's mainly rural northeast interior.

"This (warming) has already had a huge impact on the state of California," Patzert said. "It's changed the way we do agriculture, it's changed the energy and water demands, it's changed the number of days we've had frost or extreme heat."

He added: "This is another dimension of global warming that's not in the future, it's in the past. And if the population and urbanization and suburbanization continue to increase, these numbers will continue to go up."

California, the nation's most populous state with more than 37 million residents, is also one of the fastest growing, thanks in large part to immigration.

Last year, Gov.
Arnold Schwarzenegger signed landmark legislation calling for a 25 percent reduction in greenhouse gases in the state by 2020. It was one of the most ambitious greenhouse gas-curbing effort anywhere.

Three Blind Mice Part 1 I've been exploring 3D graphics using VVVV. One of the things you quickly learn when working in 3D is that doing anything with a 2D mouse is a pain. Particularly I found I was spending a lot of time shuffling the camera position which involves a tricky combination of keystrokes and mouse movements. I wanted to get a camera control that would allow me to fly the camera smoothly in 3D space. Looking for "3D Mice" in Google found a variety of more-or-less ugly and expensive commercial options, but also this project linked off Slashdot. Humm I thought, how hard could that be to copy.
The basic principle of Three Blind Mice is to run three threads round three rollers from old mechanical mice. By using the mouse reports to calculate the length of the extended thread this allows the position where all the threads join to be calculated. First job was to interface the mice to a PC. I am using old Microsoft Itellimice. The "z" axis on these mice which measures the position of the wheel is very low resolution and not suitable for this application. So, you need two mice to get the three axis of measurement required. It turns out that Windows makes it rather hard to extract input from individual mice if you have several connected to your PC. It is also rather tricky to override the normal mouse behaviour of moving the Windows cursor. Therefore rather than connect the mice directly to a PC I decided to interface the mice to an AVR microcontroller. The AVR then has a serial interface to the host PC. The PS/2 mouse interface is a bit of pain to work with, but with a bit of effort I was able to get things connected.
With the electronics working I chose to use a box file as the fame for installing the mechanics. I like the idea of hiding this rather odd project inside this ordinary piece of stationary. I cut the mice to just keep enough of the PCB mounting and roller mecanism to meet my needs. For the third axis I introduced a third mouse with only acts as a mechanical frame and as a "remote" optical shaft-encoder for one of the two actually interfaced to the AVR. The original design uses simple weights to tension the cords. I wanted something more compact and portable. I decided to use spring-loaded retracting security badge clips. This photo shows one of the mice and the tensioning device (in fact this is the third-access without any active electronics). The cord is wrapped around the black horizontal roller and through a hole drilled in the plastic tab above the roller. As you can see HOT GLUE is an essential construction component on this project. For the software I decided to run the calculations to get the mouse position on the AVR. This means that the results don't need further processing (except for scaling) on the host PC. At this point a project I had thought might take a week at the beginning had taken more like a month. Still I had a 3D mouse and it actually works pretty well. The main problem is that that the data from the mice does drift leading to innaccurate absolute lenths for the location cords. As long as you don't make too sudden movements you can use it for several minutes without having to reset the reference point. I wrote a couple of little applications in VVVV to show off the mouse both as a camera positioning tool and also as a 3D drawing tool. The problem with camera positioning though is that you have no orientation data for the mouse. You basically can look at a fixed point from different angles, but not change where you are looking. In the back of my mind I came up with a solution to fix this limitation, and I knew that I couldn't rest until the job was done properly. So, with a heavy heart I embarked on part 2 of the Three Blind Mice project.
Three Blind Mice Part 2 The aim of part 2 was to add orientation sensing to the original design. These days you can get a lot of chip-based solutions to sense orientation (except around the vertical axis). However I had an idea which was more in line with the spirit of the original design. An opto-mechanical mouse has two horizontal rollers at right angles to measure the ball's motion. My idea was to remove the ball and add off-centre weights to the rollers so that gravity makes the rollers always want to orient in one position. A bit of experimentation convinced me that this idea could give good enough results to be useful. On the photo you can see the two small nuts I fixed to the rollers. In the first stage of Part 2 I interfaced a third mouse to the AVR and doctored it as described to sense the orientation of the mouse against the horizontal plane. Amazingly it works really quite well! The last challenge therefore was to sense orientation around the vertical axis. To do this I mounted a shaft through the middle of the mouse and connected it to a shaft-encoder. This shaft encoder was connected to the spare on one of the original mice in part 1. Provided you can set some reference for the vertical axis in the mouse you can use this arrangement to get the mouse's orientation in all three dimensions. I should add at this point that the maths to translate from the mouse data to its orientation is mind bending. 3D rotation about arbitrary axis is not a pretty subject.
Phew! So, here we are at the end of the project. A full six axis 3D controller built from old computer mice. Eat your heart out Nintendo and Sony. This is the future. Demo software (running in background on the photo) allows the 3D mouse to control the camera view on a scene. You can pan around the scene any way and observe it from all angles. The 3D mouse is a little odd to start with, but once you get used to it then it actually becomes quite natural. Open the full screenshot from the thumbnail on the right. In the top left window is a red box which shows the position and orientation of the mouse. In the bottom left window you see a scene viewed from the point of view of the mouse. The right hand side is a VVVV patch to create these views. This is a project I am glad to be done with now. Much more hard work then I ever thought to start with, but I do love the fact that finally I got the results I wanted and only used scrap components.

These pictures are from a 1937 booklet published in Moscow in 1937. Based on this booklet and information from websites on Russian TV history, it is likely that mechanical broadcasting continued until the launch of electronic broadcasting in late 1937.

The Russian standard was 30 lines, horizontal scanning, with phonic synchronization. This is the same standard used in Germany and France in the early 30s. More pictures.

Explaining the button system, hmm when you but your fingertip (tumb) in the grove on the 123 button, you get 1 by manipulateing it to the left, 3 to the right and 2 by pressing the button down (if this dont explain it well enough I hope the picture will fill in the gaps.

The big silver button on top releases the spring loaded display to get called ID and to recieve you press it again while the display is out, to hang up a call you simply close the display by pushing it in (and loading the spring again).

The display is a lcd of the old calculator type whitout the reflective backing, so its seetrough.

You have probably seen my original Hard Drive Clock. It uses red and blue LEDs to make three colors for clock hands (the third color is red and blue together which is purplish). The light is seen through a slot that is cut into the top platter. With some electronics it was possible to time the flashing of the LEDs to place the clock hands where they needed to be. In this project, Christmas is just an excuse to build a parallel port connected control box capable of switching 320 individual circuits. The interface is constructed out of two types of chips: the 138 decoder and the 374 flip-flop. Each flip-flop is attached to an individual serial port that is connected to an 8 outlet switch box. Along with this system the site features lots of other home built and modified controls.

Big part of Russian Internet is affected with big epidemic. A picture with bear in the woods and naked man and woman appears in all social networks.

Somebody named Lobzz published a picture with bear that welcomes two people relaxing in the woods. An author of collage didn't change anything on the picture he just changed remark Surprise!" which was the original on Preved! (that in Russian means HELLO with changed last letter like HELOW!).

This picture was not very popular until national love and popularity came down on it. At the beginning the picture was presented as children's illustration. Than an author and the original of illustration were found. Turned out that the author is American actor, composer and, as was discovered, painter John Lurie.

After that in Livejournal.com community ru_preved was created by user saint_erasty on which more than thousands of people subscribed during few days. Hundreds of variations of collage on bears, helow and two people enjoying each other topics appear over the Internet every day.

Besides this, over the Internet quickly begun to register domains with name preved. For today three such sites are known - preved.ru, preved.org and preved.com, but they are empty for now. A domain PREVED.RU was bought for 20 $ yesterday and was sold for 1500 $ in a few days later. And it is a lot of money to Russian measures.

A word PREVED (HELOW) became popular and its statistics over the Internet begun to grow every day.

Earlier domain Digg.com belonged to Russians. You can easily see it having used WayBack Machine archive that allows you to see how did site looked in the past. From that Digg.com sites pages that preserved in archive you can see that in 2000 and 2001 years site belonged to Russians and presented senseless catalogue.

That is how this site looked like.

Apparently, that same Russians didnt know what to do with this site and that is why they just crammed in many exile on everything from finances till tourism. After that site didnt work for three years that is why there is no records in archive. And than in 2004 Digg.com became American.

Yeah, Russians or drunk away or get lost what ever you give them. They dont know how to work at all. But Americans fine fellows in this question. They just took Russian site and made it popular.
